The Albuquerque Kayak Meetup (sponsored by New Mexico Kayak Instruction, Inc) now uses the Los Altos Pool every 2nd and 4th Wednesday.

Come join us for a variety of fun skills building games, socialization and practice. Each month will feature a different game or theme to keep things fun, fresh and interesting!

Join us this month for Indoor Slalom!

Indoor Pool Slalom is one of the best ways to build your skills on flat water. How quickly can you paddle through the slalom course? Can you do it cleanly? Can you do it consistently? Can you beat your best times? Indoor Slalom will test your boat control skills and efficiency. You can race against the clock, against others, against your personal best times, or just do it for fun!

What to expect:

  1. Arrive 15 minutes early to help unload gear
  2. Sign in, pay entry/use fee, change clothes, enter pool at start time
  3. Warm-up & practice for first 30 minutes
  4. Pool divided. 1/2 for games, 1/2 for recreational use
  5. 10 minutes before closing time, we'll pull swimming lanes back across pool, exit pool, exit building
  6. We must be out of the building by closing time.

Price:

  • $8 per person
  • + $5 if you need a boat and gear
  • If you would like a specific boat, an additional $15 demo fee will apply.
  • 48hr advanced registration is REQUIRED if you need a boat and gear; please note in your RSVP if you will need a boat.
  • If you requested a boat, you must arrive by 7:45pm to get your gear. After 8pm, all unclaimed gear will be locked down for security for the remainder of the night.
  • Private instruction is available upon request. $35/hr, 2hr minimum, pre-paid. May include up to two people.
  • If you need to reserve a boat, or are interested in private instruction, please use this form and I'll follow up with you as soon as possible.

Why RSVPs are so important....
The pools are expensive to rent, and this time New Mexico Kayak Instruction covers the pool rental as a community service to local paddlers. RSVPs are needed to ensure we have a minimum number of people to cover the pool rental fees, and to limit enrollment so that the pool does not become over-crowded. Also, by RSVP'ing, we are able to communicate via email about last-minute changes, which often include cancellation due to lightening, or other pool closures.

  • If you RSVP for yourself and/or a guest (ie - you reserve a spot), and no-show, you will receive a Pay-Pal request for the pool rental fee ($8); this balance must be paid in full before your RSVP will be accepted for the next pool party
  • If you request a boat and/or any gear, and cancel after the gear has been loaded (typically 3hrs in advance), you will receive a Pay-Pal request for the gear ($5); this balance must be paid in full before your RSVP will be accepted for the next pool party
  • If you show up and have not RSVP'd, (ie -you have not reserved a spot), you may be asked to return another time if the maximum number of paddlers has been reached (typically 30) at Los Altos Pool. If there is additional space, or someone has no-showed, you'll be admitted after 8:15.

Please RSVP, and keep it current.

I learned the "basics" that I "thought" I knew - after kayaking for 10 years, I realized I should have taken this course years ago…in addition to the "basics" I was amazed at the techniques I learned regarding paddling, strokes, maneuvers, rescues, navigation and expedition planning!

Betty Beaudry
This was my second time in this class in a months' time. Although I enjoyed the first class, I felt like all the pieces began to fall in to place the second time around. I felt my skills improved exponentially. The instructors were very skilled and helpful in zeroing in on specific needs of those in the class, and were there to roll you (back up) when necessary. Loved it.
